It’s the Most Horrific Time of the Year

I really love thinking about Halloween, but the actual follow through… not so much. It’s a holiday tailored for skinny ladies, sluts, and/or creative people. I do not fall into any of these categories. For years, I got away with just wearing whatever I felt like, then splattering it with homemade blood. But how long can you really get away with calling yourself a zombie (fill in the blank)?

In 2012 I finally moved away from the blood and bought my first real costume ever – sexy Freddy Kruger… which on me was more like the world’s friendliest, not-at-all-sexy Freddy Kruger. (See above.) It was quick and easy, fairly comfortable, and virtually stress free. Plus I found the costume on clearance, so it only set me back about $20. Oh, and I got to be Freddy Freakin’ Kruger – my favorite horror icon. 2012 was an all around Halloween win.
2013, meh. I threw on some black and my friend loaned me his ginormous butterfly wings.

With 2014’s party just a couple weeks away, the search is on once again for a suitable costume. It should also be noted that my annual Halloween party is thrown by one of the most artistically gifted people I’ve ever met and he hand makes his costumes every year. So no pressure.

Here are a few options I’m considering:

This costume is far too slutty for me, but with some changes, I could definitely make this work. Overalls, a striped shirt, red shoes, a wig, and an axe. Not too difficult. Plus I could do some stellar makeup and use blood splatter without being a zombie. I really like blood splatter.

Wednesday Addams

Nothing too creative here, but with a few alterations to a black dress I already own, I could be Wednesday – a character that I absolutely love. The question is, do I possess the skills to alter my black dress? 50/50 chance. Actually, 30/70 probably. I doubt it. But maybe I could enlist some help.

Is this going to happen? No. Do I want to happen? Heck yes! Who wouldn’t want to be the Mother of Dragons? Unfortunately buying it is out of my price range and making it is too difficult/costly. But look how comfortable it would be!

I look at this costume every year because Jem is my childhood hero. It’s just SO pink! And while that was cool with childhood Rachael, adult Rachael isn’t too keen on dressing head to toe in hot pink. Still, one day I will pull the trigger on this because Jem is awesome.Remember that in 2016 when they release that abomination of a movie.

Orange is the New Black Inmate

Easiest, most comfortable costume ever. It seems like a cop out though. I’d also have to decide if I’m Morello or Alex… or more realistic for my figure, Big Boo. Life is full of hard decisions.

5 Things I Love (May 2012 Edition)

I go through phases of obsession with various and assorted things in life.
February was my last update, so here are five things I’m currently in love with, in no particular.

1.The Oklahoma City Thunder

Yeah okay, I’m always in love with the Thunder… but we’re in the post season now! If you thought I was obsessed during the regular season, you have no idea how much worse I get during the playoffs. We’ve had a good run thus far, despite our current struggles with the Spurs in the WCF. Win or lose, I’m proud of these guys. I’ve never seen a group more dedicated to hard work or more resilient. We’re so fortunate to have this organization representing our city.

2. Instagram

Welcome to 2010. In my defense, I’ve had an Instagram account for quite awhile… I just didn’t invest any time into figuring out how to use it or finding people to follow. Now that I have, I’m sort of addicted. My two favorite photo finds thus far are KD shoe shopping with Miss Wanda and Nick Collison getting some investment advice.

3. Blended iced coffees

It makes no difference to me if it from Starbucks, McDonald’s or Dunkin’ Doughnuts – I’m loving blended iced coffees. It’s become a nightly tradition to grab one before heading home to sit on the couch and watch movies.
P.S. Carmel > Mocha

4. Game of Thrones

Rachael loves a fantasy period drama?! I’m as surprised as you. Yet, every week I find myself looking forward to watching it more than any of the other shows we’re currently making our way through. It’s amazing how good a story can be when the writer figures out that the characters are the focus and events are secondary.
Also, props to Peter Dinklage for being so awesome.

5. Dreaming of a vacation

The last time I spent the night across the state line was when my friends and I packed up to see Al Pacino perform in Central Park in 2010. Since then it’s been a series of 2 to 3 hour trips for movie marathons, plays and concerts with the understanding that after arriving home no earlier than 4AM, I’ll have to get up and work by 10 the next morning.
With multiple jobs, I want nothing more for my 29th birthday than a vacation. Even if it’s only overnight in a surrounding state and I have to pay for it myself, I just want a break. So, I’ve begun planning. Mark my words, I’ll be out of here by the end of July.

Manic Monday

I seem to be having more and more stressful days.

I  don’t mean to belittle my life. I’m fully aware that I’m blessed beyond measure to have a loving family and friends, a roof over my head, transportation, employment and a full stomach.
That being said, there are still things that happen daily that I can’t seem to shake.

If you’re also noticing that peace seems far away lately, here’s my prescription:

1. Soak this in:
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

2. Take a double shot of music.
One to relax you and one to make you smile.

3. See a good movie/watch a funny show.
I suggest renting Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, visiting your local theater and catching The Artist or trying out Modern Family online or on DVD.

4. Treat yourself to something tasty.
Yeah, I know this blog has a lot to do with dieting and health, but one splurge is necessary every now and then.

5. Look at this picture of kittens in a barrel.
“The one on the left is Philip.”
(God bless the three of you who get this reference.)
